Rachel Nelson has received a Minnesota State Arts Board grant to videotape her live performance blend of songs, stories, and spoken word poetry, a blend she calls BardLive. Her BardLive creations include the touring environmental show Finding Our Place. While living in North Carolina, Nelson was awarded a North Carolina Visiting Artist Residency, serving
communities in three piedmont counties for eight months. A graduate of many bands playing traditional, Celtic, or swing music, Nelson’s focus has shifted in the last five years to performing her own maverick roots-based originals.
"Violin-playing folk singer Rachel [Nelson's] singing and idealism recall Joan Baez back in the day…. ...[her CD] Change is a Thousand Hearts features songs about peace and compassion that speak to the times "
-
Minneapolis Star Tribune
"With a voice recalling 19th century Appalachia, a wonderful fiddle technique, and lone guitar-based songs, Rachel Nelson has emerged as a musical voice for peace."
- Pulse of the Twin Cities
